Artist Statement

Julie is a visual artist who works with mixed media and most recently has been working on using a sewing machine as a means to draw. For Julie, using the sewing machine to draw is a tactile and meditative way for her to create. This type of creating can also be random, accidental, and intuitive. Needle work gives her a sense of permanence and strength. Needle work has always been an interest of Julie’s, coming from a family of tailors. As a child, Julie witnessed needle work as a traditional woman’s role – the idea that she can create art this way feels rebellious and liberating. The images Julie creates draws upon gender equality and unheard voices.
