Artist Statement
Helen Vick creates free-motion embroidered textile works with repurposed and inherited fibres, thread, fabric and paint. Self-taught since 2021, she is guided by her love of gardens, folk art, the Arts and Crafts movement and Modernism, and her three-dimensional pieces include embroidered boxes, passementerie and quilts. Helen lives with her cat, Lilou, in East London.
At Charleston is an impression of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant’s garden in East Sussex, influenced by the paintings of Cedric Morris and Mary Fedden. Painted linen; free-motion machine embroidery with cotton, rayon, silk and metallic threads; silk, cotton and organza appliqués.
