Artist Statement

Ella Richards is a self-taught textile artist who’s style of embroidery combines traditional hand embroidery techniques with engineered 3D structural elements (such as wire slips, felt padding and embroidered needle felting) to recreate natural flora and fauna. Ella created this artwork in the depths of lockdown whilst watching the garden birds from her kitchen window – she was particularly captivated by the inbuilt mechanics of a bluetit landing on a branch and the variety of wing shapes she observed.
