Artist Statement

Manoela Grigorova is an intuitive artist creating wondrous, abstract worlds that burst with joyous colours and playful textures. Born in Bulgaria in 1983, her childhood was infused with colourful textiles, tapestries, and folklore. Though originally studying Art and Fashion Design, she found her true calling in the animal charity sector, deepening her bond with nature. Her work combines fast and slow processes, layering mediums such as alcohol ink, with upcycled materials and embroidery inviting viewers to explore life’s contrasts and contradictions. Grigorova advocates for stitch art as a legitimate medium, challenging stereotypes associated with embroidery. Inspired by her love of nature and backpacking days in Southeast Asia, her Coral Wreath series reflects the beauty of coral reefs and need to protect our vibrant seas.

Coral Wreath Nine, 2022 is a collage of alcohol ink on Yupo, embroidery threads, metallic threads, wool yarn, salvaged beads and faux flowers on canvas. 70% of beading and threads are salvaged, vintage or thrifted.
