Artist Statement
Kate works directly from her own artwork often scaling up from very small colour watercolour paintings to large-scale embroideries. Dawn Flight was a recording of an early morning flock of birds seen from the studio window.
Her principal machine is the Singer ‘Irish’ industrial (model from the 1930’s) which only stitches free-machine embroidery, with the fabric stretched in a large hoop. The needle can swing up to 12mm, varied freely by using a knee-lever. Kate has a huge colour range of threads in cotton and polyester and (although not used in Dawn Flight) gold, metallic and rayon threads. Dawn Flight is stitched on a calico ground but other projects may be worked on fine silk organza or dissolvable fabrics.
