Artist Statement

The lotus, a timeless emblem in Chinese traditional culture, symbolizes purity and nobleness. Fish swimming leisurely in the lotus pond also embody inner peace and tranquility of the human spirit. This embroidery work employs techniques such as split-stitch and plain stitch from Suzhou embroidery, giving the lotus an abstract artistic form that infuses it with a sense of modernity and fashion.

Zhang Xue, the fourth-generation leader of the Xue embroidery family, possesses a remarkable innate artistic sensibility. He excels at blending traditional SuZhou Embroidery skills with contemporary art styles. Zhang has collaborated with international luxury brands such as Cartier, Kenzo, Lancôme, BMW, and Hyatt Hotels Corporation. His works have been collected and exhibited in museums in China, the US, the UK, and the Czech Republic.
