Artist Statement

Helen has had a love of the natural world from childhood. She now lives in East Sussex, an ideal location to indulge in her passion for the countryside. Walks in the Weald and on the South Downs as well as the occasional trek much further afield, provide abundant source material for her work.

Helen joined the Royal School of Needlework in 1980 where she trained as an apprentice. She now enjoys a busy career combining teaching at the RSN and working in their studio with working on commissions and her own projects. In 2006 she received a BA degree in Art and Design from Brighton University.

Hand embroidery gives Helen the medium to express her particular love of flora and fauna, working from her own photographs or images. Often, as in the work on show in the Broderers’ Exhibition, Helen will focus on a subject of a single bird, animal, or flower, painting a picture with a needle against a plain background to draw the viewer’s eye to the detail, colour and natural beauty of the subject.
