Artist Statement

Katy is a self taught embroidery artist who lives and works in Edinburgh. She employs a free hand, thread painting technique to create hyper realistic pet portraits and embroidered artworks all stitched onto her signature dupion silk fabric backgrounds.  Without any formal training in textiles or embroidery Katy stitches as she would paint or draw, so no two pieces are ever the same. All her embroidery pieces are individually designed and sketched before being hand stitched onto a fabric background.  As well as pet portrait and custom hoop art pieces Katy also works with several fashion and lifestyle brands on custom embroidery commissions and personalisation. She is also working on a her own clothing collection, for which she sources unique second hand items to revive with an embroidered design.  Due to the time intensive practice of embroidery Katy mainly works to commission so these embroidered feathers were part of one of the first bodies of work created solely for a gallery show.
