Artist Statement
Grace Gatley is a Gloucestershire-based mixed media embroidery artist with a degree in Textile Design from Falmouth University. She fuses traditional techniques with contemporary design, inspired by historical buildings, churches and cathedrals. Ornately carved masonry and mediaeval stained glass provide endless inspiration, and she often uses botanical dyes and real flowers in her work, reflecting and preserving the impermanence of fragile natural beauty in print and stitch as in ancient carved stone.
She was awarded second place in the Open Fashion category of the Hand and Lock Prize for Embroidery 2023.
Heavenly Treasures draws and reworks elements from Louisa F. Pesel’s ‘Historical Designs for Embroidery’, in a palette reminiscent of the bright jewel colours and rich gold of ecclesiastical art.
