Artist Statement
Lesley Wood is a mixed media textile artist from Durham in the U.K.
Her hand stitched work is often figurative involving reclaimed domestic everyday textiles. She uses hand embroidery to merge the traditional with the contemporary to create new narratives from the biography of the cloth. For Kinsugi Cloth Lesley Wood worked on vintage table linen and referenced the Japanese art technique of repairing broken pottery with gold to recreate something of beauty.
Having exhibited across the U.K. and abroad, Lesley Wood has received several awards for her hand embroidery. Including the Hand & Lock 0pen Textile Art Prize 2021, first prize in the Madeira Threads Competition 2023 and the Embroiderers’ Guild Margaret Nicholson Award in 2023.
