Artist Statement

Lissie’s love for repurposing old items began in childhood, inspired by adventures with her father in antique shops, where she discovered low-cost treasures and crafted stories from them.

Inspired by these memories, Lissie combines her drawing and embroidery skills to retell historical fairy tales, centering on strong, often overlooked female protagonists.

Lissie uses an old Bernina sewing machine to create vibrant, textured 3D collages infused with humour, inviting viewers to uncover the true story.

Lady Luck is the reimagined story of Poker Alice (Alice Ivers), a renowned 19th-century poker player known for her beauty and skill. The artwork features symbols of luck and references to poker and cigar smoking that reflect Alice’s persona.
