Artist Statement
Land marks, chalk is part of a body of work about the patterns in the English landscape, particularly chalk landscapes.
Screen print and paint, straight stitches, and surface darning, on original dry felted fibres, become the ridges, furrows, ploughed fields, strata, tracks, pebbles and waterways of this fictional, ‘mind’s eye’ aerial map.
Birdwatching has been an enormous part of Elisabeth’s life with her husband and sons, so birds naturally appear soaring over this piece.
Elisabeth Rutt is a freelance textile artist, tutor and mentor, working from her home studio in rural Suffolk. She has lived most of her life surrounded by chalk geology and is continually fascinated by the patterns and subtle hues of chalk landscapes.
