Artist Statement

Light at the End of the Tunnel is created to record our great concern and uncertainty at the beginning of the pandemic. We all were longing for the light at the end of the tunnel, and stitching this work helped Masako feel a sense of calm. It gave her hope, strength and resilience. Blackwork embroidery technique is used in colour.

Masako Newton is a London-based hand embroidery artist. She trained at the Royal School of Needlework, and now she works in the RSN Embroidery Studio. She is also a Broderer at St Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London and a Liveryman of the Broderers’ Company.
