Long Mary

Artist Statement

‘Long Mary’ is a name sometimes given to the heron. Conjuring up anthropomorphic ideas of a lanky, leggy character with a proud feathered plumage jacket.  Despite this the heron still somehow has elegance and Julie demonstrates this with form and use of materials.   Free motion stitch is used to draw across wings of lace and emboss metal fleece fibres which creates the smooth textures of the neck feathers in comparison to loose threads and couched lengths of raffia and feathers that form an overlapping structure of chest plumage. Threads are left loose to dangle down towards the bottom of the never-ending leg length.
