Artist Statement
Aly’s artistic journey is fuelled by a connection to the natural world. She creates intricate hangings that delve into wildlife, environment, folklore and story. Through layers of stitch, paint and movement, her dreamlike worlds are designed to captivate the viewer. Each piece sends a message of change and growth, provoking questions and feelings.
Aly uses watercolour paint and free machine embroidery stitch on natural calico, a combination of media which developed organically. She first used these two media at the age of 18, and from then her work has matured. Aly is drawn to the texture, depth and endless possibilities.
Drawing on inspiration from her childhood in the mountains of North Wales, she infuses her work with a deep appreciation for nature.
She collects images from her surroundings and feeds them into her imagination and love of folklore. Aly transforms what she sees in the real world into the sea and landscapes of her imagination.
Mabon is about a time of balance between light and dark, and in the give-and-take of life. It presents gratitude for the abundance of harvest.
