Artist Statement

Suzy Richardt is a goldwork embroidery artist and researcher living in Carthage, Tunisia, where there is a deeply established tradition of metal thread embroidery for ceremonial garments. Over the past five years, she has studied with Tunisian master craftswomen in different regions of Tunisia to learn local techniques such as barmaqli, a woven lattice of plate thread reminiscent of the architectural window screens common to North Africa and the Mediterranean. Suzy is thrilled to share this craft heritage with fellow embroiderers and to continue her research on goldwork embroidery of the MENA region.

Medina Geometry centers the barmaqli stitch among other goldwork techniques in a modern composition, drawing from geometric tile patterns often seen in the Tunis medina.
