Artist Statement
Mindfulness Triptych is a part of the Mindfulness series, which was developed during lockdown. Having struggled with a complete lack of motivation, Masako tried to focus on one stitch at a time. The overlapping two squares signify social interactions she was missing and the colours were chosen to depict her emotions on a particular day. Being mindful of one stitch at a time helped Masako be conscious of her thoughts and feelings. Blackwork embroidery technique is used in colour. Japanese gold thread is added to unify the three panels.
Masako Newton is a London-based hand embroidery artist. She trained at the Royal School of Needlework, and now she works in the RSN Embroidery Studio. She is also a Broderer at St Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London and a Liveryman of the Broderers’ Company.
