Artist Statement

Pauline Medinger creates her distinctive artworks in East Anglia. She enjoys working with a variety of media including textiles, stitch, inks and paint, often combining them as in Only Begotten.

Using a painstakingly meticulous and time-consuming technique, this piece draws on the awe and wonder conveyed by the evocative words in Psalm 139, “You knit me together in my mother’s womb”. Only Begotten portrays Jesus, the Christ, God’s only begotten son.

Christians believe that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary, conceived of the Holy Spirit. Lying in a manger, this King of Kings, Prince of Peace, born in humble surroundings, represents light in the darkness and hope of life in eternal peace.
