Artist Statement

This is a collaborative piece by visual artist Sharmina Haq and specialist hand embroiderer Sarah Smith. Sharmina’s original miniature painting, translated by Sarah into embroidery, is inspired by Islamic geometry and garden design and represents Paradise as envisioned in the Quran, emphasising harmony, balance and spirituality.

The four garden layout, divided by waterways converging at a central fountain, symbolises divine unity and the essence of life represented by water. These waterways reflect the rivers of Paradise: water, milk, honey and wine and the flowing water represents divine mercy and abundance.

The rich tapestry of flora and abundance of fauna symbolises the diversity and vitality of God’s creation, reinforcing the sacred balance between nature, spirituality and the divine. Fragrant flowers evoke purity and beauty, whilst blossoming and fruit-bearing trees are celebrated for their nourishment and sacred meaning.
