Artist Statement

Anjeli Narandran is a self-taught embroidery artist who creates vivid portraits and symbolic abstract pieces by commission. With a background in drawing, she discovered the more flexible, forgiving, and contemplative medium of embroidery when she first became a mother at the start of the pandemic. She is inspired by the organic shapes and textures found in nature and loves an unexpected color scheme. This piece began as a clearly-remembered image from a half-forgotten dream. Anjeli then used a generative AI to create a template of that dreamscape which she then hand-stitched onto mounted canvas. Reversing the process of dreaming, Anjeli wanted to turn an ephemeral dream into a tangible and tactile piece of art.
