Artist Statement
Jane Sanders is a textile artist specialising in portraits sewn entirely from different fabrics. She is also well known for sewing with unconventional materials and adding found objects, thus adding to the narrative of the subject.
Jane creates all her work on a vintage 1960’s Singer sewing machine. It is an intriguing dichotomy that the machine was originally designed for utilitarian domestic projects, yet now produces vibrant contemporary art.
Many of Jane’s portraits focus on people from popular culture. She is interested in the relationship between fan and hero, and portraying familiar face in a whole new light.
She hopes to help elevate how textile art is viewed, and hopes it can be appreciated with the same importance as painting or sculpture.
