Purple Reign

Artist Statement

Caryn has been stitching and sewing since the age of 5, when her mother (in desperation) sought an occupation for Caryn’s busy hands. In 2018 Caryn started studying with the Royal School of Needlework, achieving their Certificate, and continuing on with their Diploma in Technical Hand Embroidery.

For this piece, Caryn was inspired by her lifelong love of both the artist Prince and the colour purple. Since learning Blackwork with the RSN, Caryn had envisioned substituting her favourite colour purple for traditional black. In a bout of nostalgia, she happened across a photograph that showcased Prince’s style and personality, and Purple Reign was born; all whilst accomplishing the quotidian jobs of making dinner and driving children to school and activities.
