Artist Statement
Rainforest Lemur was created by Sophie in The Grange embroidery studio. Sophie is inspired by the techniques that can be achieved on embroidery machines and wanted to explore this further. Sophie chose a Lemur because she could play with the texture of its fur using different stitches, colours and manipulations.
Sophie is supported by The Grange Centre, a charity supporting people with learning disabilities to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Embroidery is an important part of The Grange’s identity; historically being ‘The School of Stitchery and Lace’, from 1927-1970. The Grange has since evolved to teach a range of life and work skills. The Grange’s embroidery studio continues its work, producing logos for company uniforms, personalizing items and making artwork.
