Artist Statement
Rainforest Spiders was created by James in The Grange embroidery studio. James has a keen interest in creepy crawlies and wanted to make a piece focusing on the details of a spider and its web. James painted the canvas; hand stitched the spider’s web, and machine embroidered his spider drawings.
James is supported by The Grange Centre, a charity supporting people with learning disabilities to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Embroidery is an important part of The Grange’s identity; historically being ‘The School of Stitchery and Lace’, from 1927-1970. The Grange has since evolved to teach a range of life and work skills. The Grange’s embroidery studio continues its work, producing logos for company uniforms, personalizing items and making artwork.
