Artist Statement
The Grange Centre is a charity supporting people with learning disabilities to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Embroidery is an important part of The Grange’s identity; historically being ‘The School of Stitchery and Lace’, from 1927-1970. The Grange has since evolved to teach a range of life and work skills. The Grange’s embroidery studio continues its work, producing logos for company uniforms, personalizing items and making artwork.
Rainforest is the collaborative work of The Grange’s embroidery team. Each person contributed by choosing an animal, hand drawing their response, and transforming their designs onto the Wilcom embroidery software. Choosing stitch types and colours accentuated their designs when embroidering. Drawn foliage was used to pull everybody’s designs together to create the rainforest.
