Red Sails

Artist Statement

Red Sails forms part of a series of 3D embroideries Simon Copeland created incorporating a sense of fluidity and movement into each piece. Using a range of silk, cotton, lurex and metallic thread in his freehand machine embroidery, the artwork was then embellished by hand with glass bugle beads. The majority of Copeland’s work is lifted off the background in abstract ways allowing light to cast shadows across the mounting which becomes an integral component of the finished result. Red Sails in particular plays with this concept. From his background in Fashion, Copeland enjoys experimenting with couture techniques as a way of manipulating the woven threads and beadwork.
