Artist Statement

The slow unfurling of fern fronds is one of the most magical sights to behold.

Fossilized specimens of ferns have been found dating back to the Devonian era some 380 million years ago, differing very little in appearance from the ferns we see today. This amazing plant group predates seeds, grasses and flowers and being one of the first plants on Earth, has significant cultural and historical importance. Ferns are frequently depicted and mentioned in art and literature, serving as symbols of growth, resilience and the cycle of life. In folklore and mythology, ferns are often associated with endurance and the ability to overcome challenges and thrive. All of these factors and imagery stemming from their long history on earth.
