St James Gosling

Artist Statement

Susannah Weiland is a hand embroidery artist, inspired by the colours and textures of the natural world. She works in two different styles – figurative and abstract – with nature being the common thread. A keen photographer, whenever possible she uses her own images as inspiration. St James Gosling is from her ‘Royal Park Life’ collection, inspired by the wildlife found in six of the Royal London Parks.

Susannah captured a photograph of this gosling, which served as the basis for a tonal pencil drawing. The drawing was then printed onto cotton silk fabric. Using delicate hand-stitching, she added intricate colour and texture, blending matte, silk, and metallic machine embroidery threads to bring the piece to life.
