Artist Statement

Diane Butcher was born in South-east London, but found home in Devon after some wandering.

She uses thread to explore her relationship with, and love for nature.

She has always been fascinated by the small things, living complex lives alongside ours. Taking joy in the knowledge that this fascination comes from Sunday walks with her Dad in the local woods. She hopes to inspire people to look closer.

When returning to London to care for her Dad who had dementia, embroidery took on another aspect. It’s meditative and rhythmic qualities offered escape and a pause to wonder.

This piece is stitched on olive green linen. It is stitched predominantly in couching stitch, using vintage Sylko cotton and silk thread.
