Artist Statement

Jean’s work invariably references the passing of time and the rhythms and patterns that impact our lives.
During lockdown the natural cycles of the moon became a powerful symbol of constancy in a chaotic world.
It has long been thought that full moons have the power to affect human and animal behaviour and exert influence on the sea and other natural phenomena.
This moon was one of a series depicting aspects of lunar mythology and was driven by a long time fascination with aspects of Chinese embroidery.
‘…the moon doth rise with a dragon’s face’ is a quotation from the song ‘Stonehenge’ by Spinal Tap.

This work was carried out on a discharge dyed cotton background and executed in layers of hand stitching using cotton, rayon and silk threads.
