Artist Statement
Cath Janes became an embroidery artist, specialising in anatomy, in response to her surgeries for her facial palsy. When she realised that straight stitches replicated muscle fibres her exploration of the human body began. Her first piece of the facial muscles was purchased by her surgeon.
Her aim is to make accessible and beautiful the graphic images that often make viewers look away. She also focuses on accuracy so that her images educate as well as inspire. In 2023 Cath started stitching a series of pieces that depict her experience of birth trauma.
Cath is a self taught hand embroiderer, has won seven awards from the Institute of Medical Illustrators and has exhibited at the University Hospital Llandough in Cardiff.
