Artist Statement

Ornate, Opulent and Original

Rebecca Rowan’s hand embroidery is driven by her insatiable curiosity and love of research.

Colour and sculptural qualities are vitally important to convey narrative, emotion and expression.

Unfurled Opulence is the first piece from Rebecca’s Pure Opulence collection, created during her final year of studies at the Royal School of Needlework in 2024. Inspired by 18th-century decorative design, Fabergé eggs, and her love of flora from her garden and allotment, the piece represents beauty and detail often overlooked.Hand embroidery techniques used focus on contemporary goldwork. Rebecca combines delicate metal threads, ribbons and beads onto hand-sculpted petals to form intricate layers. The monochromatic palette enhances the work’s richness, emphasizing its textural depth and opulence.
