Artist Statement

Helen MacRitchie is a textile artist based in Oxfordshire, UK, working both in the UK and Australia. With an academic background in pharmacy, scientific subjects often feature as inspirational sources of her art practice. Hand dyed and felted wool plays a significant part in her work. Extensive free machine embroidery adds texture and layers of detail relevant to the design story.

Villi is one of a series of small abstract embroideries inspired by microscopic images of internal surfaces within the human body.  This particular embroidery examines the small intestinal epithelium with its extensive folds and villi protrusions.

Merino and corriedale wools have been hand dyed and wet felted, then free machine embroidered in wool machine embroidery thread.  Free knotting by hand in toning wool yarn gives 3-dimensional detail to the villi focus.
